Why technology in sport poses a threat to keeping the game fair, safe and affordable

Resumo

A história da tecnologia no esporte é um longo e sórdido caso de amor. Emociona, parte corações e constrói o sucesso ou provoca gritos de fraude.

A humilde bola de golfe é um bom exemplo. Fundamental para o jogo de golfe é lança-la do ponto “a” ao “b” para terminar em um buraco com o menor número de tacadas possível. Mas aplique um padrão de covinhas em sua superfície e ela pode ir mais longe com menos esforço. Em seguida, otimize o padrão das covinhas e a bola enganchará ou cortará menos quando for atingida. De repente, a habilidade necessária para jogar o jogo fica mais fácil.

Permitir qualquer um desses passos evolucionários certamente desencadeará um debate sobre a importância e os limites da evolução tecnológica.

Bryce Dyer, Bournemouth University

O Dr. Dyer lecionou em Desenho de Produto por duas décadas, especializando-se em design multidisciplinar. Seu atual interesse de pesquisa é com a percepção, design e desenvolvimento de tecnologia utilizada no esporte. Como designer, ocupou cargos de consultoria em projetos de design que vão desde a premiada sinalização de segurança para o RNLI até o design de próteses usadas nos Jogos Paralímpicos de 2012 e 2016.
